A main sump pump rarely quits on a dry day. It quits when a thaw or downpour is filling the pit and the power drops.

When the power fails, a well pump stops too, leaving no pressure for a water-powered backup. A standby generator helps only if it feeds the sump outlet, and it cannot unstick a jammed float.
Room for both floats. In a narrow or shallow pit, a second float snags on the other pump or the wall, leaving a pump idle as water rises or running dry until it burns out. A tight pit may need enlarging or a combination unit.
A check valve on each discharge. One pump then cannot push water back through the other, nor can the pipe drain back whenever a pump stops. Where the pump maker calls for one, a relief hole below the valve prevents air lock.

An untested backup is only a guess.
A backup can run all storm unnoticed, and a draining battery gives no warning. An alarm above the backup's start level sounds when the main pump has lost the race, and most controllers also flag a low battery. A loud alarm suits a lived-in house; an empty one needs a text or app alert, and Wi-Fi alarms go quiet when the router loses power.

A tester loads the battery; a green charger light can glow on one that no longer holds a charge.
Terminals are cleaned and tightened. Flooded batteries get distilled water, sealed ones a check for swelling.
The charger must charge, the self-test pass and the alarm carry upstairs.
With the main pump unplugged, the backup must empty the pit. If it slows, the battery is replaced.

Expect the pit to fill and empty several times.
