What goes into that system depends entirely on what is in your water. The system goes on the main line just after the water meter and main shut-off (or after the pressure tank on a well), usually ahead of the softener and the water heater. A sediment stage is usually a cartridge in a clear housing, so you can see the grit it has caught and tell when it is due. A carbon stage is either a cartridge or, for a busier house, a backwashing tank, which needs a drain and an electrical outlet nearby. A bypass valve goes in around the whole assembly, so while a cartridge is swapped or the system is serviced, the taps keep running on unfiltered water instead of the house being shut off.
