Sump Pump Installation & Repair

A sump pump only has one job, and when it fails, the result is a flooded basement. We install, repair, and maintain sump pump systems so yours is ready when it matters most.

Overview

Your basement's last line of defence, done right

Sump pumps are the kind of equipment nobody thinks about, until a heavy storm hits, the power flickers, and the basement starts to flood (if that is happening now, call our 24/7 emergency plumbing line). We install new systems sized correctly for your home and water table, repair pumps that are failing or running constantly, and replace units that have reached the end of their service life.

One of the most common and most preventable failure points is a power outage during the exact kind of storm that causes flooding. That is why we install battery backup systems alongside primary pumps, so your basement stays protected even if the power goes out at 3am during a downpour.

If your existing pump is making unusual noises, running far more than it should, or simply old enough that you are not sure it will work when you need it, it is worth having it checked before the next big storm, not after your basement has already taken on water.

On the day, the old pump comes out, silt is cleaned from the pit, the new pump is set so it is not sitting in sediment, the check valve is replaced if it is worn, and we run water into the pit until the float trips and the pump empties it. If the discharge runs above ground outside, we talk about winter, because a line that freezes solid leaves the pump running against a blockage.

Besides the pump itself, price depends on the pit (enlarging it or fitting a sealed lid), rerouting the discharge, whether the pump needs its own outlet, and whether a battery backup goes in at the same time. We quote a fixed price after we have seen the pit.

Sewer Backup

Groundwater or sewer backup: when you need a backwater valve instead

A sump pump only deals with groundwater collecting under and around the slab. If dirty water comes up through a floor drain, a basement shower or a basement toilet during a heavy storm, the municipal sewer is pushing back into the house, and no pump in the pit will stop it. That takes a backwater valve on the main drain. Many York Region basements near rivers and on low ground need both, and we will tell you which yours needs before quoting. Several York Region municipalities have run basement flooding subsidy programs, so ask us about municipal subsidy programs when you book.

Most sump pump failures happen during the exact storms that cause flooding. A battery backup is one of the most cost-effective safeguards you can add.
Our Process

How It Works

Straightforward, no-surprise service from the first call to the final test.

1

Assess Your Setup

We lift the pit lid and look at what is there: pit depth and diameter, whether the weeping tile drains into the pit, the float type, the check valve, and where the discharge leaves the house and ends up. Most failures start with one of those, not the motor.

2

Install Or Repair

We install a new system or repair the existing one, including the pump, check valve, and discharge line, so everything works together.

3

Add Backup Protection

Where it makes sense, we install a battery backup so your basement stays protected even during a power outage.

4

Test Under Real Conditions

We test the system through an actual cycle, confirming it activates, drains, and shuts off exactly as it should.

Local Conditions

Where York Region sump pumps work hardest

Keswick sits flat and close to the water table, and on the lower lakeshore streets pumps can run through the whole spring melt; converted cottages with crawl spaces and shallow pits are the hardest to protect. Bradford near the Holland Marsh has the same problem for the same reason: low land and a high water table. So do the lower properties along the Holland River in Holland Landing and Newmarket, where heavy rain brings both groundwater and sewer surcharge. On that kind of ground a pump sized for the house, a working check valve and a battery backup matter more than anywhere else.

Common Questions

Sump Pump Questions, Answered

What York Region homeowners ask about basement flooding and pump protection.

How do I know if my sump pump needs repair or replacement? +
Warning signs include unusual noises, running far more often than usual, rapid cycling on and off, or visible age and wear. If your pump is more than 7-10 years old or you have had any flooding scares, it is worth having it inspected rather than waiting to find out the hard way.
What happens to my sump pump if the power goes out? +
Without a backup it stops when the power does, and outages often come with the same storm that is filling the pit. A battery backup is a second pump on its own float, run from a battery that stays charged from the wall; how long it keeps up depends on the battery and how fast the pit fills.
How often should a sump pump be inspected? +
We generally recommend a check at least once a year, ideally before the wet season, testing the float switch, check valve, discharge line, and running the pump through a real cycle to confirm it activates and drains properly.
Can a sump pump really prevent basement flooding? +
A properly sized, well-maintained sump pump with battery backup is one of the most effective tools for keeping groundwater out of a basement. It will not solve every water issue, but it is a critical piece of an overall flood-prevention plan.
