Each stage is bypassed and drained, cartridges come out, and the UV chamber is emptied so ice cannot crack its sleeve.
Water returns slowly on bypass, then new cartridges, a manual backwash on the iron filter, and UV on before any tap runs.

Backwash flushes trapped iron and sulphur down a drain that, on a well lot, usually ends at the septic system. We locate the bed, estimate backwash volume and look for another suitable discharge point. The line gets an air gap and is sloped to empty.
Backwash runs overnight, not during laundry, and softener regeneration water counts too. If the septic is already struggling, we say so first. Cost follows the drain run's length and route.
Iron filters and UV often share a line with a softener or reverse osmosis tap.
