Iron and manganese. Orange or brown staining in the toilet, tub and laundry is dissolved iron, very common in Georgina wells. A softener alone will not keep up with it. We install a dedicated iron filter at the point of entry, ahead of any softener, so the staining stops at every tap and the equipment after it is protected.
Sulphur, the rotten-egg smell. Hydrogen sulphide gas in well water. It is harmless in the amounts we see locally but it makes the whole house smell. Treatment goes in at the point of entry, ahead of any softener, and once it is in the smell is gone at every tap, not just one.
Bacteria and seasonal changes. Shallow wells and cottages that sit closed all winter are the ones that test positive. A UV disinfection unit at the point of entry treats every drop coming into the house without adding chemicals.
Sediment. A well pump can draw up sand and silt, and the lake-fed supply carries fine sediment at some times of year. You see it as grit in aerators and showerheads and as clogged inlet screens on the washing machine. A sediment filter is the first stage in line, so particles are trapped before they reach the iron, carbon or UV stage. UV only works on clear water, so a sediment stage always goes in ahead of it.
Lake Simcoe taste and odour. Keswick's lake-fed supply is treated and safe, but seasonal taste and odour changes and chlorine show up at the tap. A carbon filtration stage or a reverse osmosis drinking-water tap under the kitchen sink fixes that. Put the carbon at the point of entry and it covers every tap, shower and appliance in the house, not just the kitchen.
Keswick's lake-fed municipal water and the private wells on rural properties nearby are both hard enough to leave white scale on taps and kettles, shorten the life of water heaters and dishwashers, and make soap feel like it never rinses off. A properly sized water softener fixes that, and it goes after the sediment, iron and sulphur stages so its resin is not fouled by what they catch. A reverse osmosis tap for drinking water comes last in line. Neither one replaces the treatment above: a softener does not disinfect, and reverse osmosis treats only the drinking water line it feeds.
