Bacteria in a well give no sign at the tap. When a sample tests positive, we install a UV water purifier as the last stage after filtration, and the water is sampled again.
A UV water purifier belongs on a York Region well when a lab sample shows total coliforms or E. coli, especially if positives keep returning. We check the wellhead first: a cap that no longer seals or a cracked casing lets surface water in, and UV only treats the symptom.
The wells most likely to test positive are older, shallow, or dug close to a lake or low ground where surface water gathers. If a lakeshore home or seasonal cottage in Georgina, or a rural property in Stouffville, draws from a private well, a spring sample is worth taking. Lake frontage alone does not tell you the supply, so we confirm it on the first visit: a pressure tank and pressure switch usually mean a well, and a water meter on the incoming line usually means municipal water. Positives follow spring melt and heavy rain, when surface water reaches the casing.

Total coliforms usually mean surface water or soil is getting in. E. coli points to fecal contamination: do not drink the water untreated, and follow the advice sent with the result.

The lamp shines through a quartz sleeve, so the dose depends on clear glass and clear water. Silt casts shadows that bacteria slip through, and iron and hardness coat the warm quartz. A UV system for well water therefore goes after the sediment, iron and softening stages, last before the house.
Skip that order and the sleeve shows it. After a season on untreated well water it comes out wrapped in rusty iron film, chalky scale and grey silt. The lamp still glows while the dose drops, and nothing at the tap tells you.

With the chamber drained, the sleeve comes out. A film is cleaned off, etched glass is replaced and new O-rings go in.
Never silence a lamp reminder or failure alarm by unplugging. After a failure alarm, drink from another source until the unit is fixed.
On a rural property the pump and lamp stop together, but the pressure tank can still push water past a dark lamp. Wait for power and a warm lamp, then run the cold taps.
