Drain Snaking and Drain Auger Service

Hair, grease, lint and floor drain sludge: a drain auger clears the everyday clogs in York Region homes, and we say plainly when a clog needs more than a cable.

Drain Snaking

What drain snaking fixes and what it does not

Drain snake and drain auger are two names for one tool: a steel cable, turned by hand or motor, with a head that bores into a clog, hooks it or cuts it apart. A drain auger service is about matching that cable and head to the drain.

A cable suits a plug stuck in one place, but it cannot clean the pipe wall. In a grease-coated line it punches a hole and leaves the coating; in roots it cuts a channel and leaves the joint open. Both clog again, and we say so on the first visit.

Snaking is where most clogged drain calls across York Region start, and the first step in our clogged drain cleaning service.

Drain by Drain

Kitchen, bathroom, laundry and floor drains

Each drain clogs with something different, and the way in changes with it.

Kitchen sinks

Grease sets in the trap arm and the branch behind the wall, so we cable from the trap arm, not down the sink. A plug that returns every few months means a coated line. See clogged sink repair.

Tubs, showers and toilets

Hair knots around the stopper linkage and in the trap. We lift the stopper or remove the overflow plate and pull the hair out. Toilets get a sleeved closet auger, or toilet repair if the bowl must come off.

Laundry drains

Washers pump lint and fabric fibre into the standpipe trap until it overflows mid-cycle. A cable clears it; a mesh lint catcher on the hose slows the next build-up.

Basement floor drains

Sand and silt settle in the trap, and older floor drains often join the main. Water rising only in heavy rain is usually sewer surcharge, not a clog; ask us about backwater valves and municipal subsidy programs.

Pipe Material

Choosing the cable for the pipe: plastic, cast iron and clay

Before the machine starts, the technician checks what the drain is made of.

Plastic. Homes in the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions of Keswick, Bradford and Vaughan mostly drain through black ABS plastic. A cable can kink in its tight fittings and a fast toothed blade can score it, so we use a head smaller than the bore at a steady speed.

Cast iron. In post-war Thornhill and North York houses, original cast iron is often scaled inside and worn thin along the bottom. We open a path with a narrower head at low speed, and rust flakes on the cable send the camera in next.

Clay. In the old cores of Newmarket and Aurora, many clay laterals still run to the street, with roots at the joints. The root cutter goes in gently, since an offset joint can catch it, and soil on the cable points to a broken pipe.

Access

Cleanouts, access and older homes

A cleanout is a capped opening that lets a cable in without taking a fixture apart.

Where we look

Usually in the basement floor near the front wall, at the foot of the stack, or as a main trap with two caps in older basements. Finishing work can bury it under flooring.

No usable cleanout

Many older homes and converted cottages along the Georgina shore have none, or one seized or buried under crawl-space framing, so we go in through a sink trap, tub overflow or toilet flange.

What we may need to open

A seized plug in a cast iron cleanout may need cutting out and replacing, a finished wall a small access opening, and a lifted toilet a new wax seal. Nothing is opened until you have the price in writing.

Repeat Clogs

When a clog comes back: camera or hydro jetting next

The first cable run doubles as a diagnosis. Hair or lint on the head means a local clog, grey grease paste a coated line, root fibre a clay joint, and rust scale thinning cast iron.

If the clog returns within weeks, the next step is a drain camera inspection and hydro jetting: you see the cause on screen, then the jetter scours the wall if the pipe can take it. If not, the footage shows where a sewer line repair is needed.

Several fixtures backing up at once points to a main line clog; see also why a drain keeps clogging.

Your Visit

What to expect during a drain snaking visit

Access, the clog's distance and what it is decide the price, which you get in writing before the cable goes in.

1

Floor protection first

Drop cloths go down from the door to the drain, with a bucket under the opening.

2

Cleanout located

We find the cleanout or the best fixture to enter through, confirm the pipe material and choose the cable and head.

3

Tested with running water

Once the cable pulls through, taps run, the tub fills and drains or the washer pumps out, to prove the line holds.

4

What came out, explained

You see what was on the cable head and what it means for the pipe, then we close the cleanout and clean up.

Common Questions

Drain snaking FAQs

What York Region homeowners ask before booking a drain snake service.

Can a drain snake damage my pipes? +
It can if the cable and head are wrong for the pipe, so we check the material first and set the head and speed for plastic, cast iron or clay. Rust or soil coming back on the cable means we stop and use a camera.
Why did my drain clog again a few weeks after it was snaked? +
A cable opens a path but leaves grease on the pipe wall and roots in their joint. A clog that returns within weeks should go to a camera inspection or hydro jetting, not a second cable run.
What happens if my house has no cleanout? +
We go in through a fixture instead, which is common in older homes and converted Georgina cottages. Anything that has to be opened is priced in writing first, and we can quote adding a proper cleanout.
Should I pour a chemical drain cleaner in before you arrive? +
Please do not. It seldom clears a full blockage and can splash whoever opens the trap. If you already have, tell us when you call.
What decides the cost of drain snaking? +
Access, distance and the clog itself: a working cleanout is quicker than lifting a toilet, and hair gives way faster than roots. Whether a camera is needed also counts, and the price is in writing before work starts.
